About casement windows
How casement windows open
A casement window is hinged at the side or the top and opens outwards. It is the most common window in UK homes, because it suits almost any style of house and seals tightly against the frame when it is shut. A side hung casement swings open like a door and, when it is big enough, can serve as a fire escape window. A top hung casement opens from the bottom edge and is often used for the smaller lights above.
Flush or stormproof?
A stormproof casement closes over the outside of the frame with a lip, giving a stepped profile. A flush casement sits level with the frame for the flat look of traditional timber joinery. Both perform well, so the choice is mostly about how the house looks, and there is more on it in should I choose flush fit or stormproof windows.
Pros and cons
Casements are usually the most cost efficient window, they open wide for airing, and modern multi-point locks make them secure. The trade-off is that an outward opening sash needs clear space outside, which matters beside a path or a patio. Our guide to the pros and cons of casement windows goes through them in more detail.
Styles and details
Cottage bars, Georgian bars and leaded designs suit older houses, while plain glass and slim frames suit modern ones. We fit casements in uPVC and in aluminium, including Origin OW70 with a leaded detail and Smart Alitherm 300 with a horizontal transom.
