About bay windows
Types of bay window
A box bay has square sides that meet the house at right angles. A splay or canted bay has angled sides, which is the shape most Victorian and Edwardian bays take. A bow window curves outwards in a gentle arc, usually built from four or more equal panes. All three bring in more light than a flat window and add a little floor space to the room.
Replacing a bay window
Many older bays carry part of the weight of the wall or roof above them, so when the old frames come out that load has to be supported. Some bays need structural supports such as bay poles fitted with the new windows, which is why we survey every bay before quoting. It is also why bay windows cost more than flat ones, as are bay windows more expensive than flat windows explains.
Windows within the bay
The windows inside a bay can be casements, sliding sashes or flush casements, to match the rest of the house. On the bays we have fitted, you will see REHAU S706 casements with a diamond lead design, Origin OW80 aluminium in anthracite grey, and Roseview sliding sashes in white woodgrain.
Frequently asked questions
Are bay windows more expensive than flat windows?
Bay windows involve more frames, more glass and structural support, so they usually cost more than a single flat window. The extra light and space they bring to a room means many homeowners feel they are well worth it. We are happy to quote for both so you can compare.
